Shield of Faith

Take up your shield of faith

Have you felt under attack lately? You know, like when your heart starts to pound and your mind begins to race. What can you do in that moment? Find out in today’s Points to Ponder.

Recently, as I was sitting my living room after putting the kids to bed, I felt the weight of what was happening out in the world start to settle onto my shoulders. I was so disheartened. I felt like the outside world was falling apart, while I sat in seeming safety in the quiet of my home. The weight got heavier and heavier as each minute passed. I knew there was nothing I could do to change what was happening in my country or my community. I headed for my bedroom with these thoughts clutching to my chest.

As I climbed into my bed, my eyes fell on this planner that a sweet friend sent me for Christmas. I opened it up to that day, and there, at the top of the page were just the words I needed to hear: “In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one.” Ephesians 6:16.

I exhaled … I felt like I could breathe again. The shield of faith … that’s what I needed.

How can you take up the shield of faith?
  • No. 1: Make note of ALL
In the scripture I read, my eyes focused on the word ALL. It was such a relief to see in God’s Word that He said “In ALL circumstances, take up the shield of faith …” As soon as I saw that word, I knew that my faith was instrumental in bringing calm to my spirit no matter what is going on around me. How can you use this scripture to guide you in ALL circumstances?
  • No 2: It’s yours to take upI found it interesting that the scripture said: “Take up the shield of faith.” That’s a clear statement giving direction on what should be done. I’m not supposed to sit back, throw my hands up, and do nothing. It’s clear that I am to “Take up the shield of faith.” How can you take up your shield of faith?
  • No 3: The shield will guard youThe shield of faith is your first line of defense as a part of the armor of God described in Ephesians 6:10 through 17. And you can count on your shield of faith to guard you and extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one. Again, we see the word ALL here … Wow! Not just some but ALL the flaming darts of the evil one. How can that truth bring you comfort today?
